The thorax is the main base for the legs and is the main tool for locomotion. The thorax is also where the pollen baskets are located. The thorax is where the flight is able to take place due to two sets of muscles the longitudinal and vertical muscles.

The Honey bee is an insect, scientific name (Apis mellifera)

The worker honey bee is split into three parts the Head the Thorax and the Abdomen; each part of the bee is extremely important in its survival and production of various substrates.

Head: Hypopharyngeal gland is a special gland on the honey bees’ head that secretes a special protein which is fed to drones, larva, and queen bee. This substance is important in the production of royal jelly. The Honey Bee has 5 eyes. Two of them are compound eyes this means that they are able to see all around them. The honey bees are trichromatic meaning that they are able to see various colors.  Humans base their vision on red, blue and green, bees base their color vision on blue, green and UV(Buzz about Bees). The honey bee also has three simple eyes which help them with their orientation as they fly and are sensitive to light. The honey bee contains a long tongue called the Proboscis this aids the bee in sucking nectar from flowers. The Honey bee contains two antennas which are extremely important to the survival of the bees. They are used for touch and smell, as well as a tool for communication with other bees.

Abdomen: The abdomen is where the honey bees’ stinger is.  The area where the stinger is actually a ovipositor in the queen bee. The Ovipositor is the organ that allows the queen bee to lay thousands of eggs a day. The stinger is barbed which is why when a honey bee stings a human it gets lodged in the skin causing death to the bee.
